Iyán Ogún Ọdún

Overview

Iyán Ogún Ọdún is a Yoruba play written by Oyèwọlé Ògúnwálé, set in the town of Ọ̀ṣun where the respected chieftaincy title of Balógun is left vacant. After consultation with the Ifa oracle, the king and his chiefs decide on Ifábùnmi, an unassuming warrior, as the next Balógun.

This makes the very wealthy Arówóná, who wants the title for himself, furious. He believes money and influence should decide everything, so he starts plotting against Ifábùnmi, his blood brother. His jealousy leads him to do terrible things to remove him from the way. But in the end, Arówóná’s actions come back to haunt him.

Iyán Ogún Ọdún demonstrates the themes of self-aggrandisement, familial betrayal, treason, power struggle, and lastly, the spoilt-child entitlement of the elites of their right to govern (and others to follow) even when they do not possess the needed leadership qualities.
